Todorov's Theory
All media texts tell some kind of story and narrative is the way this process of story telling is organised, how stories are structured and then potentially decoded or understood. A narrative has two parts the structure and the elements.
The theory of narrative is where we now see Todorov's theory this is because his theory states that there are five stages to every film, the stages are:
A state of equilibrium where everything is fine and ordinary
Then a disruption of that order by a chaotic event
The there is a recognition that the disorder has happened
There's a attempt to restore this new equilibrium
A new equilibrium or a new equilibrium is restored
This applies to the film the Shinning.
State of equilibrium
Family move into a hotel for dad's business career
Disruption by event
Child hears voices and sees ghosts and the mum sees that the father has done no work apart from writing '' all work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy.
Recognition of disruption
Father tries to kill wife and son.
Attempt to repair damage
Try to escape the terror
A return or reformation of a new equilibrium
Wife and son get n a truck and drive away and escapes and live happily together
This applies the film of Inception because they get into trouble and the equilibrium is disrupted
Then they go through other peoples dreams to try and restore equilibrium
Then they go and restore their equilibrium and everything is back to what it was back to in the
beginning.
