Reception Theory

Reception Theory

Reception theory this suggests that when a producer makes a film he encrypts the film so that the audience has to decode the message given to them.
H/W 3 responses audiences can have to a movie
One response the audience could have to a movie is a dominant  response this means that the audience understands the message that the producer or director is trying to convey fully one way that the audience could have a dominant view towards the film if the audience come from the same culture, society or are around the same age in which case they'll have some of the experiences growing up. Another way the audience will have a dominant view towards your film if it has an easy to follow narrative this is represented in a lot of children movies like toy story because they are unable to decode as well as adults.

Another response that could be given to a movie is a negotiated response which is in between dominant where the audience completely understands the message or code conveyed and when the audience doesn't understands the movie at all which is oppositional this is what talk about later. This person  understands some of the messages shown but still can't fully understand the whole movie because the encryption is to complex.
The last response to a movie is oppositional this means that they completely reject the attempted code the producer attempted convey and make up there own which is wrong and not what the director intended to convey. The audience might create a oppositional view towards the film if they totally can't relate to the character, culture or age . Also if the narrative is very complex and have a deep encoded meaning then audience may create an oppositional view towards it also.

  1. WWW: Clear interpretation of reception theory- written on your own words and starting to explain WHY an audience member may have different responses.
EBI: You had explained the different factors which could be attributed to the way a member of the audience decodes a text. Use an example that you know of- have you ever watched a film with an older/younger member of your family and taken a different meaning from it? Why do you think this is?
